Have Game, Will Play: Valdis Story Abyssal City
Valdis Story Abyssal City is an action exploration RPG platformer. I suppose using the term Metroidvania is no longer acceptable. Developer Endless Fluff successfully kickstarted this game back in April of 2012. Having spent some time with VSAC I fully understand the 619% funding level it achieved.
VSAC has players controlling Wyatt, who is seeking answers in a war between demons and angels. The game wastes little time holding your hand and immediately immerses you into its beautifully designed world and awesome combat. Ranking up combos as you slice and dice enemies feels great. The controls are tight and very responsive using a 360 controller. Clearly Endless Fluff did not create a fully fleshed out leveling and weapon/armor/magic augmentation system at the cost of quality real-time combat.
Exploration plays a big role in VSAC. Initially it might feel as though you are being funneled through the game. However you’ll encounter a multitude of ledges, platforms and doors that cannot be accessed. This incentivizes players to return to these areas with new enabling abilities. Endless Fluff avoided other mistakes many developers make in regards to save points and boss battles. Both seem to appear frequently and in close proximity. That is something an older, busier gamer like myself can really appreciate. Valdis Story Abyssal City looks great, has beautiful music by Zach Parrish and plays fluidly. It is available on Desura and soon the same can be said of Steam.
