Have Game, Will Play: Worms Battlegrounds

My worms experience is not vast. I played a PC version years ago and several hours of the first Worms title on XBLA. That’s about it. So please indulge me if I am unaware of all the of the differences between Worms Battlegrounds and its predecessors. Now I feel very comfortable in saying that Worms Battlegrounds is a Worms game–through and through. It runs in two dimensions but uses 3 dimensional environments and character models. As far as I can tell you take turns attacking, defending and/or positioning your selected worm to complete the objectives and destroy your enemies.

Worms is known for its charm and Battlegrounds does not disappoint. Upon progress, death and victory the worms have no shortage of funny, often topical quips. In addition to all this; Lady Pinkell, your the narrator/quasi-benefactor, provides you with plenty of background information and back-handed compliments.

There are plenty of options to customize your worm and a clan, if you choose to do so. The tools available for multiplayer are much more plentiful than previous games in the series. Day to night transitions, a companion website, landscape editor, clan logo editor and more are there for players to enjoy.

My time in the single player and online modes was fun but I could not understand the price point. Worms Battlegrounds is a great worms game but I’m not sure that new players will pay $25 to discover it nor do I think worms veterans will feel compelled to continue the saga.
